The primary purpose of Omushkegikwew House (Moosonee Family Resource Centre) is to provide safety, support and encouragement to abused women and their children and to any women in crisis.

While at Omushkegiskwew House, women work on their own individual needs.  Whether a woman decides to return to her home or to do otherwise, we encourage her to become independent and to empower herself so that she can make her own decisions.

In consultation with mothers, we provide counselling for children because we are greatly concerned with their specific needs.

Our shelter is staffed with experienced counsellors, 24 hours a day.  Besides our residential services, we also offer non-residential counselling services and a crisis support program with continuing follow up support.

Crisis Support Worker

The purpose of the Crisis Support Worker is to provide pre-crisis counselling and post-crisis counselling, education and support to women who are victims of abuse and violence.  The counsellor will also develop and maintain a support network for women and assume an advocacy role within the support system.

- Provides counselling and support services to victims of family abuse and violence who are residents of the Family Resource Centre and/or  women who reside in the communities that are served by the Centre.

- Facilitate group support sessions.

- Provide crisis support counselling and public education services.

- Provide information seminars/workshops to community members on the     issues of family   violence.

 Child & Youth Support Worker

The purpose of the Child and Youth Support Worker is to provide counselling and support services to children who have witnessed woman abuse and/or family violence.  Support and education with the parent is essential for the child's emotional well-being.

- Provide group support counselling/one-on-one sessions by using the Building Bridges Program.

- Work within the school setting with children who have witnessed family violence.

- Teach techniques to mothers on how to manage children's behaviours.  Refer to other agencies when required.

- Provide information/awareness to agencies, schools and community on issues of family violence.

Transitional and Housing Support Worker

The purpose of the program is to help abused women build stable lives by helping them establish a network of supports and to find and maintain housing.  The Transitional and Housing Support worker will offer flexible services to women as they establish violence free lives.  The worker will help identify the support they need and access those supports.  the worker will also liaise and coordinate with other community support agencies.

The program will serve women who have experienced domestic violence and are trying to establish lives separate from their abuser in their community and may be residing in emergency shelters, second stage transitional housing, social housing or other accommodations.  the program may also work with women living with their abuser to make choices to increase their safety and the safety of their children.
